Development and sustainability, what choices for humanity?
Overview
Economic development is often considered as the engine of prosperity for societies, while at the same time being a source of environmental pressure and subject to issues of wealth distribution. Sustainability, on the other hand, aims to satisfy current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. The paradox between development and sustainability is therefore often mentioned, as traditional economic growth is often associated with intensive use of natural resources and negative environmental impacts. Is it possible to reconcile development and sustainability? How can we deal with the tensions between the economic objectives of growth and development and the objectives of environmental protection and sustainability? How can the social, economic and environmental dimensions of development be integrated into decision-making? What challenges do developing countries face in achieving sustainable development while developed nations still fail to do so?
These complex questions raise many challenges and invite reflection on the social, economic and environmental issues of our time.
