Professional experience :
Michael Noonan TD was appointed Minister for Finance on 9 March 2011.
Minister Noonan was first elected to the Dáil in 1981 and has held a number of senior cabinet positions. He represents the constituency of Limerick City.
He was Minister for Justice between 1982 and1986. He held two different ministerial posts between 1986 and 1987, that of Minister for Industry, Commerce and Trade and Minister for Energy respectively.
Minister Noonan was Minister for Health between 1994 and 1997, and has also served as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.
Minister Noonan was Leader of Fine Gael from February 2001 until May 2002 and was appointed Fine Gael front bench spokesperson on Finance on two occasions, between 1997 and 2001 and again from July 2010 up to his appointment as Minister for Finance. He was also on the Fine Gael Front Bench from 2004 until 2007 and during this time Minister Noonan was also the party’s spokesperson on Northern Ireland.
Michael was a member of Limerick County Council from 1974-81 and 1991-94, and a member of the Mid-Western Health Board from 1991-94.
