Hirochika INOUE

Hirochika Inoue obtained Doctor of Engineering from The University of Tokyo in 1970. Then he joined Electrotechnical Laboratory, MITI, Japan, where he was engaged in Intelligent Robot Project. In 1978, he moved to The University of Tokyo as an Associate Professor, and in 1984 he became a Full Professor, of Information Engineering. From 2004 to 2009, he was appointed as the Inspector General of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Since 2004, he has been a Professor Emeritus of The University of Tokyo. He is now engaged in R&D of humanoid robot, as CTO of Kawada Robotics Cooperation.
Prof. Inoue is recognized as one of the early pioneers of robotics research. During his 50 years of R&D, he explored wide key areas of robotics such as the compliant control of robot arm, real-time vision systems, hand-eye systems, and humanoids. He has received 20 best paper awards from wide academic societies. He is a recipient of JIRA Award (1994), The Joseph Engelberger Robotics Award (1999), IEEE Robotics and Automation Pioneer Award (2005), Shijyu-Hosyo; Medal with Purple Ribbon (2008), d’Officier dans l’Ordre National du Merite (2010), IEEE Robotics and Automation Technical Field Award (2011), and Karel Chapek Award (2014).
