Fathallah SIJILMASSI

Secretary General - Union for the Mediterranean

Professional experience:

Fathallah Sijilmassi is the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean since 1 March, 2012. He was reelected as Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean on 4 December 2014.

A career Diplomat for the Moroccan government since 1989, he specializes in economic international relations in particular with regards to Euro-Mediterranean issues.

After working in the banking sector, he participated actively to the negotiations of free trade agreements with the European Union, the United States, and several Arab and African countries.

From 1999 onwards, he held numerous positions within the Moroccan Government, Director of Multilateral Cooperation, Director of European Affairs and Ambassador to the Barcelona Euro-Mediterranean Process. At 37, he was appointed Ambassador to the European Union and two years later Ambassador to France.

In 2009 he was named CEO of the Moroccan Investment Development Agency, leading its launch and subsequent growth
