He is a former; Minister of Law & Justice , Government of India apartfrom earlier served as Minister of State for Industry in the Department of Industrial Policy &  Promotion (2006-9), Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs (Jan 2011), Minister of State for Planning , Science & Technology and Earth Sciences (Jan 2011 – Oct 2012)

He has served as Special Envoy to Prime Minister for Japan in August 2013 in connection with the preparation for the visit of their Majesties and of the Prime Minister of Japan to India in Nov-Dec 2013. He was elected as a Member of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (Aug 2013). Was a member of the Standing Committee of Parliament on Defence. He represented India at the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York (Oct 2013) and addressed the UN Security Council and the General Assembly at this time.. He is Member of the National Literacy Mission (Feb 2014)

Professional Experience:

Dr. Kumar was a member of the Indian Ministerial delegation for the 1^st Indo-Japan Economic Dialogue held in New Delhi (May 2012). Dr Kumar was member of the high powered Indian Ministerial delegation for the 3^rd Indo-US Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired by Hon. Minister of External Affairs and US Secretary of State, Ms Hillary Clinton held in Washington DC (June 13, 2012). . Dr. Ashwani Kumar has also served as the Chairman of the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha for “The Prevention of Torture Bill,” 2010. Dr. Kumar has served as Founder President of the Indo-French Parliamentary Friendship Group constituted by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and as Chairman of the India – Japan Forum of Parliamentarians established by FICCI.
