A career diplomat, Pierre Buhler teaches international relations at Sciences Po and the Hertie School in Berlin A graduate of HEC and Sciences Po Paris, Pierre Buhler is a former student of the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA, Paris). He then joined the diplomatic service in 1982, and served in Warsaw, Moscow, Paris (Deputy Head of the Centre d'Analyse et de Prévision), Washington and New York (Head of the Cultural Service, Permanent Representative of French Universities). After serving as diplomatic advisor to the Minister of Defence, he was seconded to Sciences Po Paris from 2002 to 2006 as associate professor of international affairs. He then returned to active diplomatic service, first as French Ambassador to Singapore, then as French Ambassador to Poland. In 2017, he was appointed Executive President of the French Institute, a position he holds until August 2020. Since then, he has taught at the Paris School of International Affairs (Sciences Po) and, from September 2022, at the Hertie School in Berlin. He is the author of Histoire de la Pologne communiste; Autopsie d'une imposture (1997) and of La puissance au XXIe siècle; les nouvelles définitions du monde, published in 2011 (CNRS Éditions), which received the Anteios prize for the best book of the year in geopolitics in 2012. The updated third edition is published in 2019 in paperback.
