What school for the 21st century?

Along with the family, school has long been the only place where the skills, beliefs, aspirations and ambitions of the next generation are forged. Faced with the failings of some families, faced with the disorder and disarray that prevail in some neighbourhoods, how can schools still keep the promise of equal opportunities? Faced with the gaps between communities, how can schools promote national harmony, tolerance and living together? Faced with indifference to knowledge and expertise, and with the prevailing relativism, how can schools still transmit to children the taste for and the effort to learn? Instead of being subjected to the world, how can schools still impose themselves on the world?
