Biographie


Born in Rome, 9th April 1973. Married with four children.

Education

Degree in Law with a focus on International law.

Politics

In May 2013 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Economic Development in the Letta Government responsible for internationalization and international trade policies.

In February 2014 he was confirmed in his role in the Renzi Government, which also entrusted him with the responsibility for attracting foreign investments. A member of the Council of Foreign Trade Ministers (and President in office during the Italian Presidency of the EU Council, in the second half of 2014), he was also Vice President at the 10th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), held in Nairobi in December 2015.

In May 2016 he was appointed Minister of Economic Development in the Renzi Government and reappointed in the Gentiloni Government, until 1st June 2018. He was elected to the European Parliament in May 2019, and is a member in the S&D Group. He is the Rapporteur of a report on a new long-term strategy for Europe’s industrial future. He left the Partito Democratico in August 2019 and founded a political movement: Azione.

Diplomacy

From 18th March to 10th May 2016 he was Permanent Representative of Italy to the European Union.

Professional experiences

Until 2013 he was General Manager of Interporto Campano. From 2004 to 2008 he has been the first Assistant to the President of Confindustria, the Italian employers' federation and national chamber of commerce with responsibility for International Affairs. Before taking up his duties in Confindustria, he was responsible for product marketing and programming for Sky Italia, after being responsible for relations with financial institutions and Head of Customer Relationship Management in Ferrari.
