A conflicting future to avoid
Overview
President Trump’s statement on a World Health Organization exit in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis is part of a series of similar decisions on the international commitments of the United States. As the UN celebrates its 75th anniversary facing an uncertain future, Russia, China and the United States openly alternate between blockades and self-serving investments, while accusing each other of endangering peace. International cooperation seems to be an ever more difficult horizon to reach and leaves the field open to power struggles. New forms of conflict are emerging, exacerbated by the environmental, social and technological challenges of our time. They question the form that relations between the nations of the world should take. How can we rethink the multilateral framework and the settlement of disputes in the light of these new forms of conflict?
