How Much is our Data Worth ?

Session 26

Data are considered the raw material behind the digital economy. But they are not a source of stand-alone value: it is the coupling of data and high-quality algorithms that provides value. The data economy is not neutral: it raises questions of ethics, privacy, security and proper use. For individuals, there is notably the question of transparency and the degree of acceptability with regards to their collection and exploitation of the traces they leave in social media, for example. As data help us understand and possibly predict phenomena in terms of the economy, health, employment, etc., and while they are the basis for economic models of Internet companies, their use requires strong and flexible regulations that govern this economy without hampering innovation.
