Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to France and Monaco
Stephan Steinlein took up his post as Germany's new Ambassador to Paris on August 7, 2023.
For over twenty years, he was the closest aide to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in particular as State Secretary and Head of the Federal Presidency (2017-2022).
He also served as State Secretary for Foreign Affairs (2014-2017), Director of the Secretariat of the Chairman of the SPD Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag (2009-2014), Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2005-2009) and Press Editor to the Head of the Federal Chancellery, of whom he later became Chief of Staff (1999-2005).
In recognition of his contribution to Franco-German relations, French President Emmanuel Macron named him an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 2021.
Stephan Steinlein studied Protestant theology in East Berlin. Close to the opposition in East Germany, he was the last GDR ambassador to Paris in 1990. The following year, he joined the Federal Foreign Office, where he held various posts, including at the German Embassy in Warsaw (1994-1997).
