Connected Africa, a continent transformed by the digital revolution
Overview
In a matter of twenty years, Africa has undergone a veritable digital revolution, profoundly transforming the continent’s economic, social and cultural aspects. Cell phone penetration among young Africans has doubled in ten years, and Internet connectivity on the continent now stands at 27 %, an unimaginable figure just a few years ago, according to the World Bank. This transformation has created new opportunities for economic growth, innovation and social development.
Thanks to increased connectivity and the rise of digital technologies, Africans can now access information, financial services, education and economic opportunities like never before. However, this rapid transformation faces obstacles such as the persistent digital divide, inadequate telecoms infrastructure, cybersecurity challenges and socio-economic disparities. The success of a connected Africa will depend on the ability of governments, businesses and civil society players to meet these challenges. How can the continent make a success of its digital revolution, and ensure that its benefits accrue to the entire population?
