Bio


Jorge Ney Viana Macedo Neves was born in Rio Branco, the capital of Acre, and graduated in Forestry Engineering from the University of Brasília (UnB). He currently serves as a professor in the Master's program at the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development, and Research (IDP).
Viana began his political career in Acre in the 1990s, serving as mayor of Rio Branco from 1993 to 1996. In 1999, he became the governor of the state, being re-elected and serving until 2006. In 2011, Viana was elected senator, a position he held until 2019. In 2013, he was chosen as the first vice president of the Senate.


During his time in the Senate, Viana was the rapporteur for significant legislative projects, including the New Brazilian Forest Code, the New Law on Access to Biodiversity, and the Code of Science, Technology, and Innovation. He also served as a member of the Environment Committee and president of the Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee, among other official roles.


Throughout his career, Viana has been recognized for his contributions to the environment. He received the "Leader for the New Millennium" award from Time Magazine and CNN, and the Gift to the Earth award from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2003.
