The evolution of the USA and China’s relations
Overview
It is necessary to take the measure of the two giants, in head-on competition for world leadership. The United States to keep it and China to exercise it before the end of the half-century. And following the American sanctions, China is working to acquire as much independence as possible in microprocessors and finance, for example.
The European Union, unable to defend itself and subservient to the United States, has proved helpless in the face of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. While Henry Kissinger called for the creation of a New European Geostrategic Order (NEGO) including Russia in the 1990s, the European Union has not been able, willing or able to influence the United States to create this NEGO in the 21st century.
So, between competition and cooperation, how do Sino-American relations impact the world order? What is Europe’s place in this duopoly shaken by Russian aggressiveness? Should it take sides or can it propose an alternative? New Silk Roads, American protectionism, the EU’s weakness in energy and digital technology: what is Europe’s place? Is it still necessary and possible to build a powerful Europe to avoid being crushed by the two giants or by Russia?
