Health or economy, an impossible dilemma?
Overview
The public policies implemented in the early stages of the global pandemic to counter the health effect of the coronavirus are often presented as a binary choice between lives saved and the economic cost of trying to save those lives – health versus the economy. As with most things related to the pandemic, it is not that simple. This session will look beyond the ‘dilemma’ between protecting lives, Life, and economic growth and address issues that lie at their intersection: (i) An intergenerational problematisation of pandemic management has rapidly emerged. But is it inevitable to antagonise generations in the evaluation of crisis management impacts? (ii) In the light of the 18-month pandemic, is the health/economy trade-off inevitable? (iii) What lessons can be drawn for health research funding policies?
