Toward a new ecosystem for the agrifood sector
Overview
Beyond the ecological and energy transition, calls for a “sustainable” agri-food transition are multiplying. Today, the aim is to move this sector towards a more resilient model, capable of withstanding the shocks, disruptions and crises that are multiplying (climate change, health crisis, demographic shocks, geopolitical tensions, etc.), but also capable of ensuring the agri-food security and sovereignty of all agents. There are many players in this ecosystem: producers, farmers, distributors, sellers and retailers, but also consumers. Thus, the changes to be implemented to build a new, more resilient agrifood ecosystem are to be considered in multiple and varied dimensions: at the international, European, national and local levels; at the level of producers, intermediaries and consumers.
Moreover, all agents do not have the same motivations, issues or considerations for envisaging a transition towards a more sustainable and resilient model. Thus, in order to move towards a new agrifood ecosystem, many questions need to be asked in order to collectively reflect on the changes to be implemented: How can a new global agrifood ecosystem be built, when contemporary issues are at once local, national and transnational? Between flexibility and adaptability, how can we reflect on a more resilient model in the face of new crises (health, ecological, economic…)? How can we ensure both agri-food security and sovereignty in this new ecosystem?
