Caroline FREUND
Director of Trade, Regional Integration and Investment Climate - World Bank Group
Caroline Freund is the global director for trade, investment, and competition at the World Bank. In this role, she develops strategy and oversees projects and analysis in the areas of trade, foreign investment, and private sector development. Previously she was a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and chief economist for the Middle East and North Africa at the World Bank. She has also worked in the research departments of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the Federal Reserve Board. She is an expert on international trade, trade policy, and economic growth and the author of Rich People Poor Countries: The Rise of Emerging Market Tycoons and their Mega Firms. Her research has appeared in academic journals, including: American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of International Economics, and Journal of Development Economics. She received a PhD in economics from Columbia University.
