Can We Get Rid of Extreme Poverty?
Session 28
At the end of 2015, the UN Member States adopted 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). The first of these: to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030, living on the price of a loaf of bread each day. This extreme poverty, which remarkably decreased during the last twenty years as a result of the China and India’s rise, still affects close to 800 million people worldwide, mainly in Africa and Southern Asia. However, needless to say that poverty still exists in Western countries.
In this age when man dreams of transhumanism, what should we do to eradicate extreme poverty? What are the benefits of knowledge progress? Are there several types of poverty which require different solutions? Can new technologies contribute? What are our responsibilities as citizens: must we choose between poverty, inequality and growth?
