What Place for Europe in Tomorrow’s Digital World?

While American hegemony of GAFA has been total since the beginning of the 21st century, the fast pace international development of Chinese digital companies has impressed. Over the last few years, the BATX companies (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, Xiaomi and their like) have been gaining market share in numerous sectors: e-commerce, video games, connected objects, mobile telephony and so on. Meanwhile, in terms of digital progress, Europe continues to lag behind.

Despite obvious economic opportunities and prospects for rapid growth, European companies have struggled to establish themselves in the Web market. While the European Union has been tackling the subject of taxation for GAFA, the very idea of competing with them seems a far-fetched objective.
Why has Europe fallen behind in terms of digital technology? Has the European Union lacked a sufficiently ambitious policy? Is the transformation of the American monopoly into a duopoly with China opening new prospects in the digital market? Is European digital independence a strategic issue? What policies should be brought into play: a more effective competition policy to bring about the emergence of European champions? A common policy for bankruptcy management, fostering innovation and rapid turnover for start-ups? What role could public financing play? Is our education system up to the mark? All these questions should be debated without ideology!
