The Permanent Features of the World
Session 1
What will be left of today’s world? Aside from the profound transformations in human conditions and life within society heralded by the technological revolution and artificial intelligence, and apart from predictable or unexpected disruptions in the balance of power in an interdependent world, are there any economic, political or social constants to guide our thinking about the future? Are there values we should preserve at all costs? How do we achieve such an agenda? What is the future of our democracies, the future of growth, and the future of social contracts?

An initial factor for stability lies in the conservatism of institutional structures, habits and dependency on previously-made choices. But is this an asset or a hindrance to the necessary change? Is conformity considered desirable, and should it be resisted? What is the room for manoeuvre in this respect? How are the necessary changes being taken on board in businesses, administrations and institutions in general?
A second factor for stability depends on individual and collective behaviour. Are their determinants properly understood, and are they stable? Do our models represent them correctly? It is becoming increasingly clear that human choices are not rational. How can they be represented, so that we can draw pertinent lessons from them regarding the key determinants for an economic, social and political structure that fosters peace and expansion?
